Biography

Luigi Sferrazza is an artistic director and principal conductor of Sicily Symphony Orchestra, principal conductor of Krasnodar Simphonietta in Russia, and artistic director of orchestras Filarmonica di Canicattì.

Luigi Sferrazza was born in Caltanissetta (Sicily) in December 1982; since he was very young he has undertaken the study of music. He started playing the saxophone in the band of his hometown; he continued his musical studies with the violin at the "V. Bellini” Conservatory in Palermo, graduating with honors under the guidance of V. Gambino, later studying composition with Franco Orofino, conducting with Carmelo Caruso at the Conservatory in Palermo.

He followed the annual course of opera conducting in 2008 in Pisa with Bruno Rigacci, at the end of which he was chosen to conduct an opera gala concert with the Philharmonic Orchestra Frescobaldi and Chorus Frescobaldi in Pisa.

He attended a course made by Piero Bellugi in Florence from 2008 to 2011 and he attended master classes with Laszlo Marosi, Dominique Rouits, John Farrer, Donald Tulin, and Marco Boni; since 2009 he continued his conducting studies in Paris and London following the British conductor Neil Thomson. From 2010 to 2012 he attended the LCW held at the Royal Academy of Music in London and the Cite Universitaire in Paris, in 2011 the California Institute Conducting was held by American conductors John Farrer and Donald Tulin. He conducted the various orchestras in Italy and around the world: Orchestra Frescobaldi and Coral Filarmonica Pisana, Florence Sinphonietta, Festival Orchestra of Duchi D’Acqua Viva, “V. Bellini” Symphonic Orchestra of the Palermo Conservatory, Orchestra Filarmonica Nissena, Rose Vienna Orchestra, Academie de la Toux, Bakersfield Symphony Orchestra, Collegium Musicae Archi Ensemble, Baroque Orchestra of Palermo, Operetta Company’s Orchestra “F. Sicari”, I Solisti of Mediterranean Philharmonic, Ensemble Rossini, Agrigento Philharmonic, Orquestra Sinfonica Jovem de Goias in Brazil, Mito Opera Festival of the temple valley in Agrigento, Orchestra AS Classic of Krasnodar (Russia), Krasnodar Simphonietta.

In August 2011 and 2012 he conducted the Festival Orchestra “the Belliniadi" held in the courtyard of Palazzo Minority in Catania collaborating with internationally renowned soloists and receiving acclaim from both critics and audiences. Since 2008 he is the Artistic Director and principal conductor of the Sicily Symphony Orchestra with which he has performed in over 100 concerts throughout Sicily, China, and Malta with a repertoire ranging from Baroque to premieres of Italian composers.

He has conducted numerous internationally renowned soloists such as Diana Galvydyte, Andrea Bacchetti, Ulrike Hoffman, Vadim Pavlov, the winner of Paganini price Dmitri Berlinsky, Ints Dalderis, Arkady Zenziper, Andrei Dogadin (principal viola of the St. Petersburg Philharmonic), Ilya Konovalov (Concertmaster of Israel Philharmonic). In May 2013 he released the album "The art of basso buffo" for AMR Classic by the bass Salvatore Salvaggio in which he conducted the Philharmonic Orchestra Rossini in Agrigento.

He conducted the Orchestra of the Myth Opera Festival in the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento and its first edition in 2013 has staged Pergolesi's Orfeo, Arianna a Naxos Haydn, Handel's Apollo and Daphne, La Serva Padrona of Pergolesi. In April 2014, after the big success achieved in Russia, he was appointed Principal Conductor of Krasnodar Simphonietta. As violinist he specialized with Vito Imperato, Jerome Akoka, Francesco Manara, Stefano Pagliani, Mauro Tortorelli, Eugene Sarbu and in chamber music with Demetrio Comuzzi, Ennio Pastorino and the May family in Germany. In 2004 he was a founder and first violin of the Quintetto Siciliano, strings quartet, and piano, with which he has performed in prestigious halls in Italy, Vatican, Switzerland, England, Germany, Austria, Belgium, Canada, United States, Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Brazil, Tunisia, Turkey, Australia; in 2007 the USEF Service and the Sicilian government produced their album "Suoni”.

He has worked as a violinist with the Orchestra Sinfonica Siciliana, the Theatre "Vittorio Emanuele" in Messina, the Theatre "F. Cilea" of Reggio Calabria, the Swiss Youth Orchestra, and the Philharmonic Orchestra Space Music in Orvieto. As concertmaster he served the Chamber Orchestra of Sicily, Orchestra Filarmonica of Sicily, orchestra Filarmonica Nissena, Orchestra Mediterranea, the Italian Society of operetta, and the Chamber Orchestra "A. Webern".

From 2005 to 2008 he served as concertmaster at the International Festival of Opera "Sieur Du Luth“organized by the University of Duluth, Minnesota (USA).

As a chamber player, he is working as the first violin with quartetto Alikòs, trio Masden, trio Amarcord, and Respighi ensemble.
