Balazs Fulei

Instrumentalists / Piano

Mr. Fülei is a Bartók performer of calibre, he approaches characters markedly, makes authentic paces, dares to depart from the enshrined interpretations of the Hungarian Bartók performer practice, which bespeaks of great courage and advanced sovereignty.”

(Élet és Irodalom, January 2015)

Balázs Fülei’s connections to Bartók are truly colorful: as one of the most sought-after performers of the Bartók Memorial Year in 2016 he has given numerous concerts in Hungary and abroad  – in Vietnam, for instance, he was the first Hungarian musician to play Bartók’s works. In 2017 he participated in two extraordinary performances: in a joint letter concert titled ’Viva Bartók!’ with András Bálint at the Radnóti Theatre and in another program titled ’Allegro Barbaro’ in which Bartók’s piano pieces and the folk melodies inspiring them have been revived with Muzsikás Folk Ensemble.

He gave his first solo recital when he was twelve years old, then after his years in the conservatory, as a student of the Liszt Academy he has entered the international music scene as well: in 2005 he was the winner of the International Piano Competition ’Arcangelo Speranza’ in Taranto and has won further prizes in Milan, Cagliari, and Moscow. The International Holland Music Sessions has chosen him twice to be the soloist of the concert tour titled New Masters On Tour.

Important stages of his professional life include the Grand Hall of the Liszt Academy and Müpa (Palace of Arts) in Budapest, the Konzerthaus in Vienna, The Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Kioi Hall in Tokyo, the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow, NCPA, the most prestigious concert hall in Mumbai and the Carnegie Hall in New York where he made his debut recital in 2008. He has worked together with the most significant Hungarian and foreign symphonic orchestras, he has given concerts in almost every country of Europe and also in Israel, in the USA, in Australia, Japan, China, and Vietnam

He has a wide range of chamber music repertoire, plays regularly with his permanent formation, the Auer Trio. On February 8th Balázs Fülei was the guest artist of Camerata Bern in the Grand Hall of the Liszt Academy and played concertos by Liszt and Bach. The concert was broadcast live by Bartók Rádió.

There are more than thirty piano concertos in his repertoire including all the piano concertos by Beethoven, Brahms, and Bartók. He has been in work connection with several Hungarian composers and he is credited with premieres and radio recordings.

He released 4 solo albums, in 2013 the works of Bartók and Grieg, in 2015 Brahms, Beethoven, Debussy, and András Gábor Virágh compositions connected to the Moon theme. In 2019 he recorded some Liszt pieces as well as the penultimate sonatas by Beethoven and Schubert. The first CD recorded with the Auer Trio was released Christmas 2019.

He has been teaching at the Liszt Academy since 2012 and has been the Head of the Department of Chamber Music since 2015. He has held piano and chamber music masterclasses all over the world and he is the founder of the international Echo Summer Academy held in the Károlyi Castle in Fehérvárcsurgó every year in July.
